Farewell Broadway Broad Gauge - Last Broad Gauge Steam Train to Wycheproof. 7/10/2017
On Saturday 7th of October, 2017, Steamrail Victoria ran a farewell tour from Melbourne to Wycheproof, in Victoria's Mallee Country, the tour being a huge success. The idea was to farewell the Broad Gauge (5' 3 - 1600mm gauge) line that runs along the Calder Highway, which at this point is called Broadway. The feature here is that the railway runs almost tramway-style down the middle of the road. In the coming months this line will be closed temporarily for conversion to Standard Gauge (4' 8 1/2 - 1435mm) as part of a massive upgrade of rail lines in northern Victoria.
The train left Melbourne before 6am with V/Line's N472 and Steamrail's T356 making for quite a sight as they hauled the train to Maryborough, where veteran steam locomotive A2 986 and support vehicles were added to the front of the train, along with the two Diesels, for the run to Wycheproof, where the steamer was placed in the lead for the long ran back to Melbourne.
Our video opens just north of Ballarat, at Sulky, then we see the train at Talbot in open countryside, before watching the proceedings at Maryborough. From Maryborough we see the train on dual gauge track at the locality of Simson, then rolling down into the small town of Dunolly where the Dual Gauge ends. Off towards the north-east we go, seeing the train in remote locations such as Tarangulla, Arnold, Kurting, Wychitella, and Charlton before finally entering Broadway, Wycheproof.
The train sets down its passengers in the street and eventually moves to the grain silo to take coal and water. At departure time we are on the side of the road watching and waiting as the train makes its way down the street and eventually departs for Melbourne.
On the return we chase it into the night, enjoying the day, and seeing the A2 pass through Buckrabanyule, Korong Vale (where it joins the line from Manangatang, and formerly, Robinvale on the NSW/Vic border.) Next we see it on the straight near Glenalbyn, then rounding the bend at low speed at Inglewood, before climbing out of Maryborough, not to be put off by annoying level crossing bells!
Getting towards dark, we see the A2 making good progress and sound through the rolling grades around Creswick, north of Ballarat, then arriving into the grandeur of Ballarat station, where this video ends, and we say goodnight to the weary travellers who would not see Melbourne for some hours yet.

Steam Trains : Bendigo Line Anniversary Special. Sun 21/10/12
Some views of Steamrails special to Bendigo to mark the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Bendigo line, and to also return R711 back to service. The R used to be on display outside of the Bendigo railway station after being place in the park in 1981 after being swapped for R766 for Steam Age Australia.
The tour ran on Sun 21/10/12 and is seen at various locations along the Bendigo line on the down and up journey. The R was built by the North British Locomotive company in the early 1950's, only just predating the first of the EMD diesels that entered service with the VR. It has since been modified to an oil burner from it's days with West Coast Railway.

Walhalla and Walhalla Railway
Recently I was at Walhalla, I was on the Great Victorian Bike Ride which this year it was from Lakes Entrance to Phillip Island 591 klms all up, No I didnt ride it I was a volunteer on the ride I was driving what is known as the SAG Wagon, the SAG Wagon is a 22 seater bus that picks up riders that maybe tired or injured or have mechanical problems with their bikes.. Walhalla is 2 Hours from Melbourne south east. In this clip you will see some of the town and the surroundings plus it has a narrow gauge railway which I was able to get a clip of.. Walhalla is a quaint little town set in a valley, not only does it have a narrow gauge railway it also has a mine which you can take tours down.I have been told that Walhalla only got electricity 15 years ago, because of the location it was difficult to supply it..??
