Denham is the administrative town for the Shire of Shark Bay, Western Australia. At the 2006 census, Denham had a population of 607.Located on the western coast of the Peron Peninsula 831 kilometres north of Perth, Denham is the westernmost publicly accessible town in Australia, and is named in honour of Captain Henry Mangles Denham of the Royal Navy, who charted Shark Bay in 1858. Today Denham survives as the gateway for the tourists who come to see the dolphins at Monkey Mia, which is located 23 kilometres northeast of the town. The town also has an attractive beach and a jetty popular with those interested in fishing and boating.

1. Hamelin Pool Marine Nature Reserve Denham
The Hamelin Pool Marine Nature Reserve is a protected marine nature reserve located in the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Shark Bay in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia. The 127,000-hectare nature reserve boasts the most diverse and abundant examples of living marine stromatolites in the world, monuments to life on Earth over 3,500 million years BP.

2. Monkey Mia Western Australia
Monkey Mia is a popular tourist destination located about 900 km north of Perth, Western Australia. The reserve is 25 km northeast of the town of Denham in the Shark Bay Marine Park and World Heritage Site. The main attraction are the bottlenose dolphins that have been coming close to shore for more than fifty years. Rangers from the Department of Parks and Wildlife carefully supervise the Monkey Mia Dolphin Experience.

Denham is coming into dugong and turtle season where they swim with people out the front of the park. People stay at the park for 3 - 4 months at a time to escape the cold weather in Perth and migrate here. Tim also talks to guests Pat and Lina who have been coming to the park for eleven years in the wintertime. There are 150 powered sites, 10 unpowered sites and 18 cabins. Part 2 of our travels from Perth to Shark Bay and we kick off at a great free camp just outside of Kalbarri. We roll through Shell Beach and Denham for a look before pulling up for a few days at the beautiful Monkey Mia to see the dolphins.

Perth to Exmouth, Coral Coast Western Australia Road Trip

We rented a campervan in Cairns and set off on a 2 and a half month road trip around Australia. It’s a heck of a long way (20,000 km!!) but these videos will show what we got up to on the road!
