Cape Lookout National Seashore preserves a 56-mile long section of the Southern Outer Banks, or Crystal Coast, of North Carolina, USA, running from Ocracoke Inlet on the northeast to Beaufort Inlet on the southeast. Three undeveloped barrier islands make up the seashore - North and South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks. The seashore includes two historic villages on Core Banks, Shackleford's wild horses, and the Cape Lookout Lighthouse, which has a black-and-white diamond pattern. A visitors center for the seashore is located on Harkers Island. Thousands of Safety Violations Found in North Carolina

IN MEMORIAM: HAROLD C. CRESWELL, JR.
Harold C. Creswell, Jr., who retired from Haughton Elevator in Toledo, Ohio, in 1989 as vice president of Manufacturing, passed away on February 5 at the age of 84. Creswell was a U.S. Marine who fought in the Korean War. Despite lacking a high-school diploma, he worked his way up at Haughton from floor sweeper to the vice president position. He spent 38 years with the company, retiring after it had been acquired by Schindler and manufacturing moved from Toledo. Creswell is survived by his wife, Donnajean; sons, Jeff, Mike and Cris; daughters Susan and Cathy; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Church of St. Andrew United Methodist or Faith Community United Church of Christ.

THOUSANDS OF ELEVATOR-SAFETY VIOLATIONS IN N.C. COUNTY
A Channel 9 Eyewitness News investigation of the nearly 5,000 elevators in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, where Charlotte is located, found thousands of elevators with at least one safety violation and several with issues so severe that the state threatened to shut them down. Further, emergency responders performed 325 rescues of entrapped passengers in the county in 2015. The state has six elevator inspectors, and each unit is inspected once a year before being issued a certificate of operation. Unsafe elevators do not receive certificates, the state inspector said.

Shackleford Banks Kayak Camping - Cape Lookout National Seashore

My wife and I spent the weekend kayak camping at the Cape Lookout National Seashore.

We drove down Saturday morning and launched at the Harker's Island Visitor Center. From there, it was a 4.9 mile paddle across to the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. We fired up the JetBoil and had lunch before making the rough crossing to Shackleford Banks.

We set up camp and soon had three of the ~120 feral horses on the island come visit. We weren't sure they'd let us in our tents when the sun went down, but fortunately, they slowly moved on.

We made the paddle back to Harker's Island early Sunday morning. It was a great quick trip!
