A video where I took a stroll up Sukhumvit Soi 11, Bangkok. I point out many bars, hotels, nightclubs etc... I've included some old footage to draw comparisons in some sections.
Soi 11 was always my favourite place to stay in Bangkok when I used to visit on holiday because it is 10 minutes walk (or a short taxi ride) to both Nana and Cowboy, and the better clubs were on your doorstep.

Additional notes:
A lot has changed in Bangkok since the summer of 2016. All over the city street food carts and restaurants are being driven out in a move to make the elite more money. On soi 11 many of the street food carts have been replaced by permanently parked vans and taxis.
Condominiums in Bangkok are being built at breakneck speed, especially around the Skytrain and MRT stations. There is a land grab too, where older buildings are being bought up, demolished, and held for future condominiums to be built. At some stations such as On Nut and Udom Suk they have overbuilt condos so much that the local infrastructure can't cope at rush hours.
Due to this overbuilding there is almost no resale market in Bangkok for these condos, as prospective buyers simply buy the new units. Bangkok condos are often not the best long term investments, as many suffer ongoing problems by being poorly designed, poorly built, and have bad property management agencies. The oversupply means that selling for a profit is very hard to achieve.
Cheap Charlie's is gone as was the nice row of restaurants in the alley behind.
Bangkok is fast losing it's rugged character and charm. It's conceivable in the future bar areas like Soi Cowb0y, Soi Nana and other nearby tourist places will be put under pressure with sky high rents and the land grabbing condo developers might swoop in one day. Soi 11 might be all condos and hotels one day too, as who wants noisy nightclubs and bars on their doorstep?
Soi 11 and pretty much anywhere in Bangkok potentially can have nearby construction noise. I would advise anyone to check the latest Tripadvisor Hotel reviews to see if noise is a persistent problem where you are staying. When checking in to your hotel if there is nearby construction simply request a quiet room away from the noise to minimise potential disturbance.
Insanity Club, a lot of investment has been made here. They are trying to recreate the premium club experience of Vegas or Ibiza by getting international DJs in etc... Whether it will work or not in the long term is anyone's guess. The EDM music they play is very loud inside. It seems busy right now as Soi 11 is gridlocked every night from midnight to 3am around that corner. No flip flops allowed for guys.
Fraser Suites. If you're visiting Bangkok in Sept/Oct/Nov 2017 then right now you can get rooms for around $76 a night which is great value as they usually start from $115.

10/31/2017 Note...Issues I have with this unit that Garmin has done nothing to improve upon in 7 months with a firmware update.
Some of these are little things, while others we think really need some work. The good news here is that seeing it is all software, it surly can be improved with software updates. None of these are deal breakers as I know they surely will be improved over time seeing the unit is new. YET NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE!
- The RV 770 tells you are coming up to a State boarder, and shows an icon at the top right, but does not say you are crossing it. “Welcome to New York” would be nice as you cross into a state. We missed this from the other unit.
- It does not tell you when you crossing into a new time zone. “Changing Time Zones to Central Time”. We had changed Time Zones and did not know it until 4 hours later. This seems basic and just missed.
- No separate volume control for the “alert dings”
- No voice warning on things ahead that you should know about. Curve ahead. Construction ahead. Steep Grade Ahead Etc. It should SAY IT and not just ding. The ding can be missed. Anything important should be said out loud.
- There is no CURRENT time on the map display!!! (Though it seems like a little thing, this one was a shock actually.)
- You can’t set the amount of distance ahead for notices of an exit or something. It would usually give us a notice at 1.2 miles out at 70 MPH….This is WAY to short of a distance when you are driving a big rig and may need to get over in traffic. It also should be based on speed of travel, as I am sure it is, but done poorly. Surely if we are moving at 70 MPH we need more of a warning of something coming up other then if we were traveling 45 MPH. You try moving over a 42,000 lbs coach that is 61 feet long with an SUV in tow, in traffic, with one mile notice at highway speeds. :)
- When you have reached a WAY POINT, ie we had it plot to a Flying J along the way. It does not say you have reached it and then give you something you have you click to Continue on or tell it to move on to the next stop. (Incase the location is not spot on) It really mucked us up as we did not know it was trying to route us back to the same Flying J as it did not think it reached it yet. We had no idea what it was doing until it was too late. We had thought it had automatically moved on to the next stop or something. When you reach a point, it should show on the screen a flag or something and then give you options to continue to next stop or cancel route.
- When it needs to REROUTE, it is SUPER SLOW compared to the Rand McNally we were using. I do know that Rand McNally spent a good deal of time improving their speed of re-routes etc. We needed to be rerouted a few times and it was really bad to the point that we would miss the turn as it was not done yet and we had passed where it would want us to turn. It then would need to start the reroute again. Not sure on the logic it uses, but it seems it runs a full route calculation to the destination again vs just looking at a smaller segment to get you back on track connecting you back to the route. We feel this needs a good deal of improvement.
- We find they are totally waisting the screen space. It’s a nice screen, they should use it more. They give little to no information or things you can simply press on the map screen. We believe they should show things like what is the next exit coming up or even the current mile marker number. Some times you need to know what exit you just passed or what is the next one coming up incase you want to make a change. (Without needing to press something.) They could do simple things like Current Arrival Time and Remaining Miles on top of each other even in the same area as the font could be smaller. Not even a current compass heading. The more ease of use, the better. Give the user settable options of what to show on the map screen. Let people customize. The RV 770 really lacks user settable options when it should not in this day and age.
PLEASE!!! If you own a unit, please send notes into Garmin about such things as the above that you find. After all, if they do not hear about it, they can not improve the user experience. So if some of the above are important to you also…Let them know! Note however, we could not find ANY e-mail address to send note to on their site!!!
But as mentioned, we are still shocked they have not made any improvements in 7 months and I am not the only one who had such complaints.
