Kangaroo Island is Australia's third-largest island, after Tasmania and Melville Island. It lies in the state of South Australia 112 km southwest of Adelaide. Stokes Bay is a bay in South Australia on the northern coast of Kangaroo Island located about 38 kilometres west of the town of Kingscote. It is described as being the largest of a number of coves located along the coast between Cape Dutton about 3 nautical miles to the west and Cape Cassini about 7 nautical miles to the east. The source of the bay's name is reported as taking its names from supposedly takes its name from the first mate of the Hartley which arrived in South Australia in October 1837 and is not to be confused with a Henry Stokes , a sealer who lived on Kangaroo Island prior to 1836 or a John Stokes who arrived on the island in 1817 and who is reported as residing at Stokes Bay.

It is a naturally occurring sand dune system roughly covering two square kilometres. The dunes vary in size with plenty of small dunes and the highest dune is approximately 70 metres above sea level. As of 2015, Brown Beach consists of a strip of land located between the coastline with Nepean Bay and the Hog Bay Road. It was proclaimed under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 in 1993. The Lashmar Lagoon which is considered to be a significant wetland is located within the boundaries of the conservation park. Kangaroo Island is an incredible place to visit in Australia. The island is Australia’s second largest (after Tasmania) and is located close to Adelaide in the state of South Australia. A short car ride followed by a scenic ferry trip brings you to this wildlife paradise. There are lots of things to do on the island from diving and sand boarding to tasting local wines. Where Kangaroo Island really comes to life is its great nature and wildlife. The coastline is amazingly beautiful and wildlife such as Kangaroos, Wallabies (and even very shy Koalas) can be found everywhere. You could stay for a week on Kangaroo Island (and some people never leave), but 3 days is a great amount of time to explore the best of Kangaroo Island.
