Barcelona, Spain Travel Guide: Must see the Human towers, know as (Castellers) If you travel to Barcelona anytime from June to November, here is something you cannot miss. Human towers, known as Castellers, is a tradition that was born in a town called Valls, near the city of Tarragona, in the southern part of Catalonia towards the end of the 18th century. The individual groups (colles) started to compete in sporting events. Thus, not only the building itself was invented, but also the competition.
A castell is considered a success when stages of its assembling and disassembling, can be done in complete succession. Traditionally, the castellers perform their tower building during the main parts of larger festivals. Usually, three colles come together and build their human edifices.
The Castellers de Barcelona kept on refining their technique and the towers became higher and higher. Castle building requires an ample supply of strong, healthy people of different ages and sizes.
The musical element of castle building is more than mere entertainment. When buried deep inside the pinya, it is almost impossible to know what is going on above. Therefore, the musicians, flautists) and percussionist, play at very specific stages and giving clues of the building process, and letting everyone know when the dismantling of the castle has commenced.
