Lençóis Maranhenses seems like an archetypal desert, but in fact, it is not an actual one. Lying just outside the Amazon Basin, the place is subject to a regular rain season during the beginning of the year. The rains cause a peculiar phenomenon: fresh water collects in the valleys between sand dunes and is prevented from percolating down by a layer of impermeable rock which lies underneath the sand. The resulting blue, green and black lagoons are surrounded by the desert-like sand.

Pacification of Brazil slums ahead of World Cup in Rio de Janeiro
Originally published on October 9, 2013
Another pacification operation took place on Sunday (October 6) morning in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to clear drug gangs from 12 shanty town in the Lins favela complex ahead of the 2014 World Cup. The operation was carried out without incident within a matter of hours, according to The Guardian.
The complex is located within three miles (5 km) of the Maracanã World Cup final stadium.
The operation began just after daybreak with armoured personnel carriers rolling through streets. Hundreds of heavily armed troops and paramilitary police swept through neighborhoods, and will likely stay for two weeks before a more lightly armed resident force sets up base in the area.
Street cleaners followed the military operation by cleaning up roadsides and picking up garbage. According to the Rio state governor, Sergio Cabral, authorities plan to spend £140m to improve living conditions. Officials then whitewashed graffiti of Red Command symbols, and draped the Policia Military insignia over the walls. Local children, meanwhile, were invited to ride on police horses while authorities displayed bags of cocaine, cellophane-wrapped blocks of hash and gun clips they claim were found during searches. A van broadcasting appeals for support traveled through town, saying that the new era begins now.
The pacification programme has been a controversial one, as many suspect it is merely aimed at improving the city's image before the World Cup and Olympics with no longer term plan in place. Authorities insist otherwise.

Concentrating Solar Power in Brazil
Concentrating Solar Power is one of the most promising alternatives for the diversification of the Brazilian energy matrix.
The Online Platform for CSP ( was originated under the Projeto Energia Heliotérmica (Concentrating Solar Power Project) which is the result of the cooperation between Brazil's Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the German Cooperation for Sustainable Development through the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
In this cooperation project, MCTI and GIZ create the prerequisites for the application and dissemination of a CSP based energy generation in Brazil. The dissemination of knowledge about the solar thermal technology reflects one of the main activities of the project. Therefore, cooperation has been established with the performer partner of the Online Platform for CSP, the Brazilian Institute for Information in Science and Technology (IBICT), focusing on providing updated information on solar thermal technology and its application in Brazil.

Spaniard convicted of killing 5 arrested in Brazil
(7 Dec 2018) Brazilian police say a Spanish man convicted for the 1977 killing of five people in a Madrid trade union office has been taken into custody in Sao Paulo.
The head of the Federal Police in Sao Paulo said at a joint Spanish and Brazilian press conference Friday that Carlos Garcia Julia was arrested Thursday.
He was walking down a street in a middle-class neighborhood, and later taken to the police where through his finger prints the authorities identified him.
Marcos Frias Barbens, the Spanish Police Commissioner said Spanish police believed that Garcia Julia had been living in Latin America but they did not know which country.
Garcia Julia is believed to have lived in Argentina, Venezuela and Bolivia before arriving in Brazil and had also been using a false identity, which derailed the search.
Officials said Spain is expected to request the extradition of Garcia Julia who is being held in a federal police cell in Sao Paulo.
Garcia Julia told police that he was working as an Uber driver.
Brazilian police said Garcia Julia has been living in Brazil since at least 2001 when he entered the country with Venezuelan papers that identified him as Genaro Antonio Flores Mategran.
