Driving Scenic Route 11 in Shenandoah Valley Virginia
Driving I-81 at exit 257, and followed Rt. 11 north through New Market, Mt. Jackson, and stopped filming in Woodstock (all VA). Large sections of Rt. 11 are considered a scenic byway but think Rt. 40. Before the interstate, this was the highway, so there's some sprawl in little towns and sections of it run right through Staunton, Harrisonburg and Roanoke, making it very congested decidedly non-scenic. This part above (check out the google map of the area) runs right along this big mountain ridge so it's lovely.

The house has a large kitchen, measuring 11 by 18 feet with an updated stove, dishwasher, cabinets and countertops. Two large, sliding windows above the sink allow plenty of natural light into the room, while providing impressive views to the outside. Also in the main area, the first bedroom has a very large walk-in closet and a connecting full bathroom. This bathroom has been renovated and is conveniently connected with the kitchen, providing access for guests.
Also convenient from the kitchen is a very large side room that can be used for many purposes as well as the laundry area, complete with washer and dryer hookups. In this part of the house is the second full bathroom, complete with updated cabinets and vanity, and includes a full bathtub. As with the rest of the house, this bathroom has a large window overlooking the scenic property.
Upstairs from the second bathroom is a loft. This space is easily used as a bedroom, office or playroom.
Attached to the house, and accessible from the connecting porch is an original cellar room, great for storage. Above this cellar room is an additional large room that can be used as a bedroom or nearly any other purpose.
Key features of this house are its many windows providing ample natural light, original architectural elements, versatility of the spaces and convenience of modern appliances. The house also has a front and side porch, just right for enjoying the area’s moderate summers.
This property is located in Shady Valley TN, which is a wonderful rural community in the northeast part of the state. This community is located approximately halfway between the towns of Damascus, VA, and Mountain City, TN, with quick access to the cities of Bristol, TN, Elizabethton, TN, and even Boone, NC. The area is rich with natural beauty, nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. Nearby points of interest are the Cherokee National Forest, South Holston and Watauga Lakes, Backbone rock and recreational area, and numerous hiking opportunities including the Appalachian Trail.
Although Shady Valley is a small community, it does have an excellent public school, post office, high-speed broadband and general stores. Additionally, the local community is vibrant with annual events such as the Cranberry Festival.

The New River Gorge National River is a unit of the United States National Park Service designed to protect and maintain the New River Gorge in southern West Virginia. Established in 1978, the NPS-protected area stretches for 53 miles (85 km) from just downstream of Hinton to Hawks Nest State Park near Ansted.New River Gorge is also home to some of the country's best whitewater rafting. The focus of this rafting is in the New River Gorge from the Cunard put-in to the Fayette Station take-out. The river levels for the New River Gorge (and most other major whitewater rivers in the United States) can be checked at American Whitewater.[3]New River Gorge is also one of the most popular climbing areas on the east coast with over 1,400 established rock climbs. The cliffs at The New are located just below the rim of the gorge and are made up of a very hard Nuttall sandstone. The rock is very featured, and an abundance of crack and face routes, with occasional large roofs. Almost all climbs are one pitch long and range from 30 to 120 feet (37 m) in height. The majority of the routes in the gorge are for advanced climbers in 5.10-5.12 range of the Yosemite Decimal System with about an equal number of traditional and sport climbs.New River Gorge National River was established in 1978 as a unit of the national park system. Located in the Appalachian Mountains of southern West Virginia, the park encompasses over 72,808 acres (295 km2) of land along 53 miles (85 km) of the New River from Bluestone Dam to Hawks Nest State Park.[1] A rugged, white water river, flowing northward through deep canyons, the New River is among the oldest rivers on the continent. The park is rich in cultural and natural history and offers an abundance of scenic and recreational opportunities.President Jimmy Carter signed legislation establishing New River Gorge National River on November 10, 1978 (Public Law 95-625). As stated in the legislation, the park was established as a unit of the national park system “for the purpose of conserving and interpreting outstanding natural, scenic, and historic values and objects in and around the New River Gorge and preserving as a free-flowing stream an important segment of the New River in West Virginia for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations; More Info
In A Day's Drive: Martinsville-Henry County, Virginia
Martinsville-Henry County was featured recently on WSLS 10's program Daytime Blue Ridge in a segment called In A Day's Drive. The segment features ideas for summer vacations and staycations located within the region and also offers travel information on a companion website InADaysDrive.com.
The short film shows TV personality Natalie Faunce checking out a bike from the Activate Bike Barn located along the Dick & Willie Passage Rail Trail and enjoying a ride on the interpretive trail. The High Bridge
We took advantage of the perfect Spring weather to combine a motorcycle ride and some drone flying. Leaving Richmond, we headed out to Farmville to check out the High Bridge – an old train trestle spanning the Appomattox River. The historic structure has been converted into a pedestrian bridge allowing for fantastic views of the river and the surrounding forests.
We were lucky to come on a weekday so there only a few other visitors (most of which make an appearance in the video). On weekends, the trail is popular for hikers, bicyclists and even folks with their horses.
The majestic High Bridge, which is more than 2,400 feet long and 160 feet above the Appomattox River is the centerpiece of High Bridge State Park. The park, located outside Farmville, Virginia is a multi-use trail ideally suited for hiking, bicycling and horseback riding. It is the longest recreational bridge in Virginia and among the longest in the United States. High Bridge, a Virginia Historic Landmark, is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The bridge itself was completed in 1852 and the full line was completed in 1854. The High Bridge's twenty piers contained almost four million bricks. It supported a wooden superstructure with a pedestrian walkway beside the rail line, along with an adjacent wagon bridge which would ultimately play a pivotal role in the outcome of the Civil War.
The High Bridge played a key role during Confederate General Robert E. Lee's final retreat from Petersburg in the last days of the War. The Battle of High Bridge took place there on April 6–7, 1865. During the Civil War, both Union and Confederate forces attempted to destroy the bridge. The Confederates succeeded in setting the bridge on fire on April 6, 1865, to prevent its crossing by the Union.
After the Battle of High Bridge and his surrender at Appomattox, Robert E. Lee told the men who had destroyed the bridge to go home and start its rebuilding. Engineers began building temporary spans to replace those that had been destroyed. The South Side Rail Road company eventually finished the work and rail traffic resumed in September 1865.
Rebuilt after the Civil War to its former dimensions, the 21-span structure was 2,400 feet long at a maximum height of 160 feet above the Appomattox River Valley. It is currently unusable for traffic. By 2005 its then-owner, Norfolk Southern, had abandoned the corridor, subsequently giving 33 miles of the line to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. High Bridge opened to the public on April 6, 2012, the 147th anniversary of the Battle of High Bridge.
