The Austrian city of Salzburg is situated on the northern edge of the Alps, close to the border of Germany. Surrounded by lakes and mountains, and straddling the banks of the Salzach River, few cities can match Salzburg’s fairytale setting.

Just off the Old Market Square, savor 300 years of coffee-making tradition at Café Tomaselli. For classical Austrian fare served with a side of Opera, take the short walk to Stiftskeller St. Peter. At the Müllner Bräu Brewery, hang out with beer devotees from all over the world.
Salzburg has long been a city where inspiration knows no bounds, especially when it comes to its palaces. Just a short stroll from the Marionette Theater, the grandeur of Mirabell Palace and Gardens awaits. While on Salzburg’s southern outskirts, explore the playful water features at Hellbrunn Palace.
While Salzburg abounds with fountains, some of the city’s most impressive water features are its natural ones, such as Lake Wolfgang and Krimml Waterfall. For a waterfall with a difference, visit the spa town of Bad Gastein, whose falls roar straight through the heart of town. From the town, take the cable car to the summit of Stubnerkogel Mountain and walk Europe’s highest suspension bridge.
The Salzburg region is full of surprises, so before heading back to the city, head underground, into the Hallein Salt Mine. From its salt mines to its symphonies, from its fountains to its waterfalls, Salzburg plays out like a living opera, filled with drama, comedy, intrigue and passion.

Vienna, Austria: Around the Freyung and Minoriten neighborhoods in the historic core
There are may squares in the old city of Vienna. Freyyung is one of the most interesting squares, surrounded by palaces like the Plais Harrach and the Palais Kinsky, in baroque style from the ealy 18th century. The Schottenkirche (Schotten church) and Schottenkloster (Schotten monastery) are also located in the Freyung. The church was rebuilt in baroque style in the mid 17th century.
The Minoritenplatz is one of the oldest squares in Vienna and is dominated by the Minoritenkirche church, after which the square is named. The square is surrounded by imposing baroque palaces like the Palais Lichtenstein, the Palais Niederösterreich and the Palais Starhemberg. Minoritenkirche is a gothic church built in the 14rh century.

Oberstein Castle - Schloss Oberstein
Oberstein Castle was built at the beginning of the 14th century by the Masters of Daun-Oberstein and notified for the first time in 1330.
At the end of the 18th century the left Rhine area was occupied by Napoleons revolutionary troops and they sold Oberstein Castle to families from Oberstein, who lived there until the great fire in 1855.
A slow but steady disaggregation of the castle ruin started, boosted by the move-out of the youth hostel in 1956. When the eastern wall collapsed and fell into the Oberstein valley, citizens of Idar-Oberstein gathered, founded the Club and started the reconstruction. It took several years to get rid of the debris and to reconstruct a couple of rooms during the 1980s.

The Eifel lies in the southwest of Germany. In the past, one called this region also Prussian Siberia. At that time it was a poor region with a harsh climate, agricultural land, and forests.
Today the forests are reforested with old tree species and home to birds of prey, wildcats, and lynx. The report about the sighting of a first wolf already leads to violent defensive reactions in agriculture. Yet, the comparison with Siberia falls short. Siberia is much larger, has high mountain ranges and is home to many wild animals such as bears, wolves and even tigers. Siberia still allows you to live close to nature.
Originally, massive volcanic eruptions characterized the region with its extensive forests and many waters. In the Eifel, one describes the volcanic craters filled with lakes as maars. About 10,000 years ago, the last volcanos erupted in the Eifel, and still today they are considered active.
Today there are still 12 maars filled with water. We make a short visit to the Maars of Daun. The Schalkenmehrener Maar (not in the picture), the Weinfelder Maar, also called Totenmaar and the Gemündener Maar.
The regions offer nature lovers extensive leisure zones, ideal for hiking, riding, kayaking, etc..
Siberia has long been on our wish list because we want to know more about the genuine Siberia, the landscape, the tradition, and the people. Maybe we will find some unexpected similarities.

Die Eifel liegt im Südwesten Deutschlands. In der Vergangenheit wurde diese Region auch als Preußisch-Sibirien bezeichnet. Damals war es eine arme Region, mit einem rauen Klima, landwirtschaftlichen Nutzflächen und Wäldern.
Die Wälder wurden mit urspünglichen Bäumen wieder aufgeforstet und bieten Greifvögeln, Wildkatze und Luchs eine Heimat. Die Meldung über die Sichtung eines ersten Wolfes führt bereits zu heftigen Abwehrreaktionen in der Landwirtschaft. Jedoch hinkt der Vergleich mit Sibirien. Denn Sibirien ist um ein vielfaches größer, hat hohe Gebirgsketten und ist Heimat vieler Wildtiere wie Bären, Wölfe und sogar Tiger. Sibirien erlaubt es noch wirklich naturnah zu leben.
Ursprünglich wurde die Region mit ihren ausgedehnten Wäldern und zahlreichen Gewässern von massiven Vulkanausbrüchen geprägt. Die mit Seen gefüllten Vulkankrater werden in der Eifel als Maare bezeichnet. Die letzten Vulkanausbrüche in der Eifel liegen ca. 10.000 Jahre zurück, aber die Vulkane gelten als noch aktiv.
Heute gibt es noch 12 mit Wasser gefüllte Maare. Wir machen einen kurzen Besuch bei den Maaren bei Daun. Das Schalkenmehrener Maar (nicht im Bild), das Weinfelder Maar, auch Totenmaar genannt und das Gemündener Maar.
Die Regionen bieten Naturliebhabern ausgedehnte Freizeitzonen, ideal zum Wandern, Reiten, Kajaking, etc.
Sibieren steht schon länger auf unserer Wunschliste, denn wir wollen mehr über das echte Sibirien, die Landschaft, die Tradition und die Menschen erfahren. Vielleicht finden wir ja unerwartete Ähnlichkeiten.
