Goethe House
Was the family residence of the Goethe family, most notably Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, until 1795. Was destroyed during the Allied bombing of Frankfurt on May 22, 1944, but was restored after the war between 1947 and 1951, as closely as possible to its original condition.
Römer
A medieval building in the Altstadt. One of the city's most important landmarks. Is located opposite the Old St. Nicholas church and has been the city hall (Rathaus) of Frankfurt for over 600 years.
Frankfurt Zoological Garden
The second oldest Zoo in Germany. Was founded in 1858 by citizens of Frankfurt. Features over 4,500 animals of more than 450 species on more than 13 hectares. Lies in the eastern part of the Innenstadt (inner city).
Frankfurt Cathedral
A Roman Catholic Gothic church located in the centre of the city. Dedicated to Saint Bartholomew. From 1356 onwards, emperors of the Holy Roman Empire were elected in this collegiate church as kings in Germany, and from 1562 to 1792, emperors-elect were crowned here.
Palmengarten
One of two botanical gardens in Frankfurt am Main. The largest garden of its kind in Germany. Located in the Westend-Süd district. The exhibits are organized according to origin in free-air or climatized greenhouses. Contain numerous tropical and subtropical plants.
Liebieghaus
A late 19th-century villa. Contains a sculpture museum. Was built in 1896, in a palatial, Historicist style, as a retirement home for the Bohemian textile manufacturer Baron Heinrich von Liebieg. The museum includes ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian sculpture.
Grüneburgpark
A park in the Westend district. The name derives from the Green castle, which stood on the site in the 14th century. A popular place for recreation among the Frankfurters, especially in the summer months.
Europaturm
A 337.5 metre (1,107.3 ft) high telecommunications tower. The top of the tower can turn and provides a panoramic view of the Rhine Main area. The upper part of the structure housed a restaurant and discothèque, but since 1999, the Europaturm has been closed to the public.
Hessenpark
An open air museum in Neu-Anspach. Was founded in 1974 by the Hesse State Government. Showcases half-timbered buildings from the land of Hesse. As of 2006, there were almost 100 houses on display. A popular family destination.
Naturmuseum Senckenberg
The second largest museum of natural history in Germany. Boasts the largest exhibition of large dinosaurs in Europe. One particular treasure is a dinosaur fossil with unique, preserved scaled skin. Contains the world's largest and most diverse collection of stuffed birds.

Germany's Most Beautiful Alpine Lake, Königsee
Lake Königssee (or Königsee) lies just a couple of miles south of the town of Berchtesgaden and is Germany's deepest and cleanest lake.
This area has been used for outdoor recreation for centuries; Bavarian royalty and the local rulers of Berchtesgaden and Salzburg hunted here, Hitler went boating on the lake, and Eva Braun liked to sunbathe on the shore.
The Königssee is a wonderful example of a crystal-clear alpine lake. It's easy to get to from Berchtesgaden, just inside the Berchtesgaden National Park, and doesn't require any strenuous hiking. A short bus ride from town takes you to the parking lot; then it's a 10 minute walk to the lake and the boat dock.
Visitors can glide along the length of the lake in an quiet electric boat, right past vertical mountain walls to the much-photographed baroque church of Sankt Bartholomä, and further on to the dock at Salet at the southern end. Along the way, the boatman blows a blast on his trumpet and the echoes bounce back from the mountain walls.
There are only two stops: St. Bartholomä and Salet. The mountain walls are so sheer, there is no path around the lake, so the boat is the only way to explore the Königssee.
The lake is about 5 miles (8 km) long and rather narrow, like a fjord (it was carved by glaciers). About two-thirds of the way out, roughly 30 minutes, is the church of Sankt Bartholomä. You can get there off and explore, hike a bit along the edge of the lake (or climb 6 km up to the Ice Chapel), and eat at the restaurant in the former hunting lodge next to the church.
During the summer, they serve fresh and smoked trout and whitefish, pulled from right the lake. No other fishing is allowed on the water.
St. Bartholomä church was originally built in the 12th century, then remodeled in the 16th century using a domed style influenced by Ottoman architecture.
After stopping at the church, the boat continues for another 30 minutes to the southern end of the Königssee, at Salet. If you have time, I recommend you also ride out to Salet and do the 15 minute walk to a smaller lake, the Obersee, and enjoy gorgeous views of the mountains reflected in the mirror-like surface, and the tall Röthbach waterfall.

The Königssee is a natural lake in the extreme southeast Berchtesgadener Land district of the German state of Bavaria, near the Austrian border.
Most of the lake is within the Berchtesgaden National Park.
Situated within the Berchtesgaden Alps in the municipality of Schönau am Königsee, just south of Berchtesgaden and the Austrian city of Salzburg, the Königssee is Germany's third deepest lake.
Located at a Jurassic rift, it was formed by glaciers during the last ice age.
It stretches about 7.7 kilometres in a north-south direction, and is about 1.7 kilometres across at its widest point.
Except at its outlet, the Königsseer Ache at the village of Königssee, the lake is similar to a fjord, being surrounded by the steeply-rising flanks of mountains up to 2,700 metres, including the Watzmann massif in the west.
The lake is noted for its clear water and is advertised as the cleanest lake in Germany.
For this reason, only electric-powered passenger ships, rowing, and pedal boats have been permitted on the lake since 1909.
Swimming is permitted except in the lock area at Seelände.
Due to its picturesque setting, the lake and surrounding parklands are very popular with tourists and hikers.
In addition, the surrounding sheer rock walls create an echo known for its clarity.
On boat tours, it has become traditional to stop and play a flugelhorn or trumpet to demonstrate the echo.
Previously demonstrated by shooting a cannon, the echo can be heard to reverberate up to seven times.
The trumpeter plays along with the returning sounds, so that there seem to be as many as seven players.
St. Bartholomä, a famous pilgrimage church with an inn nearby, is located on a peninsula about halfway down the western lake shore.
The small Christlieger island is located near its northern end.
South of the Königssee, separated by the Salet moraine, is the smaller Obersee lake with the 470 metres high Röthbach waterfall.
Because there is no lakeside path on the steep shore of the Königssee, St. Bartholomä and the southern edge can only be reached by boat, or via hiking trails up the surrounding mountains, except during harsh winters when the lake freezes over.
Stepping on the ice, however, can be fatal, as it was for a motorist who, in winter 1964, drowned in his Volkswagen Beetle on the way back from St. Bartholomä.
The car was found only in 1997 at a depth of about 100 m.

The Pilgrimage Church of Wies (German: Wieskirche) is an oval rococo church, designed in the late 1740s by brothers J. B and Dominikus Zimmermann, the latter of whom lived nearby for the last eleven years of his life.
It is located in the foothills of the Alps, in the municipality of Steingaden in the Weilheim-Schongau district, Bavaria, Germany.
It is said that, in 1738, tears were seen on a dilapidated wooden figure of the Scourged Saviour.
This miracle resulted in a pilgrimage rush to see the sculpture.
In 1740, a small chapel was built to house the statue but it was soon realized that the building would be too small for the number of pilgrims it attracted, and so Steingaden Abbey decided to commission a separate shrine.
Many who have prayed in front of the statue of Jesus on the altar have claimed that people have been miraculously cured of their diseases, which has made this church even more of a pilgrimage site.
Construction took place between 1745 and 1754, and the interior was decorated with frescoes and with stuccowork in the tradition of the Wessobrunner School.
Everything was done throughout the church to make the supernatural visible.
Sculpture and murals combined to unleash the divine in visible form.
There is a popular belief that the Bavarian government planned to sell or demolish the rococo masterpiece during the secularization of Bavaria at the beginning of the 19th century, and that only protests from the local farmers saved it from destruction.
Available sources, however, document that the responsible state commission clearly advocated the continuation of Wies as a pilgrimage site, even in spite of economic objections from the abbot of Steingaden.
The Wieskirche was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983 and underwent extensive restoration between 1985 and 1991.
