A Day in Tübingen: SouthWest Germany
If Tübingen was a girl, I would have asked for her hand in marriage. Never have I seen such a pretty town so full of energy and character.
Tübingen is a historic university town in SouthWest Germany, the common name for the state of Baden-Württemberg; the student population of 23,000 adds to its spirit. I was lucky to be visiting on one of the most vibrant days of the year, as you will read further. Join me for a day in Tübingen.
LET’S GO PUNTING
My trip started with a boat ride, or a punt, on the Neckar river. Lined with walking trails and trees on one side, and beautiful buildings on the other, there is no better mood setting than this idyllic ride. The play of colours and shadows in the water, the cool breeze, the voice of the boatman-cum-guide, the chirping of birds and the gentle ripples in the water are all that my senses needed. I was taking pictures with my mobile and DSLR but it was one of those moments when I wanted no gadgets with me.
WALKING THE STREETS
You will be hard-pressed to find a level street in Tübingen; the whole town seems to have built on a hilly terrain. The town is best explored on foot - it is small enough to be covered walking mostly. The cobbled streets take you through academic blocks, palaces, churches, the city hall, shops, eateries and more. You will often find yourself back to spots you crossed earlier but that adds to the charm of the exploration.
UMBRIAN-PROVENÇAL MARKET
I was lucky that my visit coincided with the entertaining Umbrian-Provençal Market; this street market is put together annually by trades and crafts people of the twin towns of Aix-en-Provence in France and Perugia in Italy. Most of the streets in the town centre were lined with mom-and-pop shops, wine outlets, cake and coffee stalls, foods of the participating regions and entertainment. Bands would be walking around, and I couldn’t help shaking a leg or two myself.
BEBENHAUSEN MONASTERY AND PALACE
I must thank my guide for strongly recommending a visit to Bebenhausen Monastery and Palace, a short bus ride from the town centre, nestled in the gently rolling hills of the Schönbuch Nature Reserve.
Bebenhausen Monastery is one of the best-preserved Cistercian abbeys in southern Germany. Founded between 1180 and 1183 by Rudolf, Count Palatine of Tübingen, the abbey was taken over by Cistercians a few years later – and promptly developed into one of the wealthiest monasteries in the region. After the Reformation swept through in 1534, and a boarding school was established in 1560, the number of monks dwindled, until the monastery was finally dissolved in 1648.
The abbey’s idyllic woodland setting also appealed to the kings of Württemberg. Bebenhausen passed into their possession in 1807, when much church property was officially annexed by German states. From 1868, parts of the monastery complex were converted into a royal hunting palace, which became a favourite venue for the monarchs and their entourages.

Sunny Side Up in SouthWest Germany
If you are looking for some sun in Germany, head to the state of Baden-Württemberg, popularly known as SouthWest Germany. I did - and experienced much more than just warmth and glow in the region.
With temperate summers and gorgeous springs and autumns, the state could rank as one of the best places on the planet to fall in, and stay in, love. It is the land of the Black Forest, hills, rivers, castles, palaces, museums, cobbled streets, universities, shopping, casinos, spas and coffee shops. Walk, hike, cycle, row, drive, climb - these are just some of the ways to get around and savour everything on offer.
I was in SouthWest Germany for a week recently - it may have been a whirlwind of a trip covering five towns but it was enough for me to give it top rating. And not surprisingly, I made a promise to myself to be back with more time on my hands.
What was my itinerary like? Here is an overview of places I visited - stay tuned for detailed posts.
* Stuttgart: The state capital houses the Mercedes-Benz Museum and the Porsche museums and is a must-visit for a roadie like me. Its inner city quarters with antique shops, artisans’ workshops, cafes and quaint wine taverns were just the kind of sights that get my senses tingling. Adding to my excitement were the street markets in the Schillerplatz (the old city centre), buzz in the Schlossplatz (Palace Square), train rides, hop on - hop off bus tours and the brilliant cafes and restaurants.
* Tübingen: It was delightful walking around the undulating streets of the town, browsing through the university town’s history. ‘Punting’ on the Neckar river is a must-do for everyone as is a visit to the Bebenhausen Monastery and Palace; few will recommend the latter since it is a few miles out of town. I was lucky that my visit coincided with the entertaining Umbrian-Provençal Market; this street market is put together annually by trades and crafts people of the twin towns of Aix-en-Provence in France and Perugia in Italy.
* Karlsruhe: I was lucky once again to be in town to see the light installations on the Karlsruhe Castle, an impressive structure surrounded by gardens you would want to make a home in. A visit to ZKM, the Centre of Art and Media, took me back to the earliest days of consumer computing while offering a glimpse of what the future holds. Another town where you just keep walking and discovering.
* Baden-Baden: This is the spa capital of Europe, and I ensured I got myself some treatments - much needed after being on the move for five days. The nearly 200 year old Casino Baden-Baden is a charming place, and could well be the setting of a future James Bond flick. The town was in festive spirits, with live music performances in gardens and market squares; you know where my evening was spent.
* Heidelberg: One of the most beautiful places on the planet, surrounded by hills and forests and the Heidelberg Castle perched up above. A university town, I visited a student’s jail - never knew such places existed at one time. A ride on the solar boat, Neckarsonne, gave me a good sense of the town during my short visit. The trip ended with a Bohemian themed party where I stood out for not being dressed for the occasion.

GERMANY: St Maurus Chapel near Beuron [HD]
The St Maurus Chapel was the first architectural project of Father Desiderius Lenz, in Beuronese art.
Peter Desiderius Lenz (1832--1928) was a Benedictine monk and along with Gabriel Wuger a founding member of the Beuron Art School.
Beuronese art is principally known for its murals with muted, tranquil and seemingly mysterious colouring. It was based on the elements of ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and early Christian art.
The chapel is situated near Beuron, at the Danube break-through at the Swabian Jura in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Stadt Nagold 720p (Film-Version)
