Heidelberg has a pleasant, old-fashioned appearance, with charming four-story buildings that share a similar architecture of matching facades and harmonious, earth-tone color schemes, topped with clay-tile roofs. No two buildings are exactly alike and yet they all blend seamlessly in a simple Baroque style. While the exteriors may be centuries old, they are maintained spotlessly with fresh paint and modern fixtures. The shop interiors are totally contemporary, if not futuristic, with all the latest goods on sale. Numerous restaurants will delight you with their gourmet fare and tasty beer.
We then visit the most important single sight in Heidelberg -- the magnificent castle on the hill. It is a romantic ruin, with enough buildings still standing to present a very good idea of how wonderful this complex was during its glory days in the 15th-17th centuries. The extreme mix of destruction and beauty conjures up the turbulent past of this strategic fortification, with crumbling walls and towers standing next to a complete palace containing a fully-restored interior. And while here, you get a fantastic view looking down on the Old Town -- more than just beautiful, this is one of the great vistas of Europe, and the castle itself ranks in a lofty league with those of Salzburg or Edinburgh.
Philosophers Walk (Philosophenweg) in Heidelberg, Germany
So many things to do in beautiful Heidelberg, Germany and one of them was doing the famous Philosphers Walk (or Way as some call it) - Philosophenweg, in German. It is a bit strenous at first, since you start at the foot of the old bridge (Altebrucke) by the Neckar River and take some winding steps quite a ways up. But, it is all worth it, for lovely views along the way and especially those from the top. Many famous poets, philosphers and writers have walked this path for hundreds of years (including Mark Twain who wrote about it in A Tramp Abroad), along with everyday students from the University of Heidelberg.
One of the interesting sights we saw near the top was a Bismark Monument - apparently these are all over Europe, not just Germany, and were a tribute to Otto von Bismark, first chancellor of the old Third Reich.
A walk through historic Ladenburg
A collection of clips put together from our walk through Ladenburg today. Key features of Ladenburg are the Roman walls and fortifications which have been kept in good repair.Many old buildings dating back to as early as the 1400's, and that Ladenburg is the origin point of the automobile where the wife of Carl Benz took her historic drive from Ladenburg to Rheinau. The world's first Sunday drive, so to speak. Unfortunately the Carl Benz museum was closed on the day.

Hemsbach, an der Bergstrasse - Sehenswürdigkeiten
Wir beginnen unseren Rundgang durch Hemsbach, einer Kleinstadt im Nordosten Baden-Württembergs, am Bahnhof.
Danach schauen wir uns u.a. die St.-Laurentius-Kirche, das katholisches Pfarrhaus, die ehemalige Synagoge, das imposante Rathaus, die Zehntscheuer und die Goetheschule in der Gartenstraße an.

We start our tour through Hemsbach - a small town in north- eastern Baden-Württemberg - at the train station. Afterwards, we will visit the St. Laurentius church, the catholic parsonage, the former synagogue, the impressive town hall, the Zehntscheuer, the Goethe school in Garden street, amongst others.
