Sunset in Denmark @ LUNDEHøJ, A PASSAGE GRAVE - Around 5000yrs old!!!
A burial mound known as LUNDEHøJ, rising to a height of about 5m, surrounds this passage grave (or megalith tomb), one of the most impressive and handsome in Denmark! It is located approx. 26km south of Thisted.
The chamber itself was discovered in 1837 when an excavation was made from the top down into the mound, but no more than the chamber itself and the adjoining small room were cleared out on that occasion. It was not until the 1890's that the passage was opened completely, and at that time the southwestern end where the stones had been removed previously in order to obtain access to the chamber, was closed again.
All that is known about what the tomb contained is that the remains of unburnt human bones, a fine battle axe of stone and some earthenware sherds were found in the small room. In the side of the mound itself, above the corner stones of the passage, a clay vessel was found in 1890 containing cremated human bones and certain small bronze objects dating from the Late Bronze Age. This passage frave is of a shape and structure peculiar to Scandinavia; it dates from the middle of the Late Stone Age in the third Millennium B.C.
The grave and its mound, which I am filming on, together with the surrounding piece of land and a pathe from the highway up to mound, were declared protected and scheduled in 1838 and placed in care of the National Museum on behalf of the State in order that they remain unharmed and preserved for posterity.
