What's REALLY Down Zzyzx Road? Hidden California, Explore It With Us!
If you live in southern California, and have driven the 15 to Las Vegas, or vice versa, you've been by this exit, and probably wondered, whats with the name? What's down it... A lot of history, and interesting stuff!
It's unfortunate, but most of the other videos on YouTube mischaracterize this place. It is not abandoned, it's not spooky, haunted, or scary, it's beautiful, and has a colorful history.
It was once a church, run by a well intentioned man named Curtis Howe Springer, who didn't always play by the rules. He ran a health resort and ministry on this land for decades. Way ahead of his time, he was a proponent of healthy living, health foods, healthy juices, and the like. His evangelist radio show reached millions of people all over the world. He took in the downtrodden, and charged whatever they could afford, even if it was nothing. He offered Mineral Baths in his purported Healing waters, Raised rabbits onsite, grew fresh vegetables, tea's, and sold several Miracle Cures which were generally vegetable juices. Curtis even helped save a fish from extinction. The government eventually foreclosed on his mining claims (he wasn't mining, and was more or less here illegally) and evicted him from this place after a long court battle. The property was then given to the Cal State system, and is now the Desert Studies Center. Many of the original structures are still standing, leaving a testament to a person, who's energy in this world was powerful and surreal...

Lost Trains - Abandoned Train Trolley Graveyard in Woods
On this explore, Fran & I get up super early to meet our friends Greg & Jayson to shoot photos and a new video of the trolley graveyard. This is a one of a kind spot with an amazing back story to it as well. Any time of the year is pretty much a good time to visit this location but our goal was to check this place out in the fall. The vibrant colors of each trolley car against the changing leaves made for a bunch of amazing photos. We were only here for about an hour until we were escorted off the property by woman who had an organized tour through the property. She was charging $150 per quest for her 3 hour tour. We offered her money for her troubles but she declined because is wasn't as much as her guest had paid. Fran & I came back a couple days later on our way home to try and get some more footage for our video which was a success. We even caught a really awesome sunset too! This is definitely a timeless location that will always be one of our favorites!

Down By the Bay 2016 (Pt. 22) - The Santa Cruz Boardwalk (Abandoned 5 Days a Week!)
October 25, 2016 - In the sleeping northern California surfing town of Santa Cruz, there lies a boardwalk. In the off season it's abandoned five days a week (though open weekends), though you still have the opportunity to meander through the property at all times. It's hardly in disrepair or anything, since it was open to the public just two days prior to my arrival, but there's still something a little disconcerting walking through an empty amusement park, no matter how clean.
It was nice to meet the Pacific Ocean again, face-to-face, er, foot.
Motorcycle Road Trip '08, Part 3, Southwestern U.S.
Every year I take a big motorcyle road trip. This year I toured the Southwestern United States looking for weird roadside attractions and oddities on my way to Ocean Beach for 10 days of surfing. I took a whole bunch of pictures, obviously, but I also shot some companion video to help remind me later where exactly I was at, etc. So, I spliced all the pictures together with the video to make an quick(ish) slide show...
Part 3 takes me from Ocean Beach, CA to Denver, CO by way of Phoenix, AZ and Moab, UT.

Western Edge of US/Mexico Border Barrier Panoramic View
The western edge of the US/Mexico border barrier on the beach and Pacific Ocean starts the video as it pans clockwise with views of the Pacific Ocean and uninviting beach area. Monument Mesa with Friendship Park atop is follow by the off limits paved road to the park from the beach as video comes back to the border double fence with the lighthouse behind it in Mexico, ending back at the western edge of the barrier..
