Lake Tahoe has forever drawn travellers to its shores, from the Native Americans who call this place Big Water, to the trappers, timber cutters and pioneers who followed.
When you’re ready for a little alpine magic, take the four-hour drive from San Francisco to the sunlit shores of Kings Beach. Set on Tahoe’s northern end, this beach was named after local card shark, Joe King, who used his winnings to develop some of the lake’s earliest lodgings. On the lake’s southern shore, is Pope Beach, where you’ll find another Tahoe institution, Camp Richardson.
From Pope Beach follow the bike path to the Taylor Creek Visitor Center. An open-air classroom for the entire family, the center features fabulous interpretative walks such as the Rainbow Trail.
Nearby, at DL Bliss State Park, follow the spectacular Rubicon Trail into neighboring Emerald Bay State Park. This park is home to the Eagle Falls Trail, a moderate two-mile hike that takes in some of the Sierra high country’s finest views.
When the ponderosa pines bend with the season’s first snow, Tahoe transforms into the nation’s favorite winter playground. Whether you’re looking for snow-capped peaks or crystal clear coves, places to bond with loved ones or pockets of pure solitude, The Lake in the Sky has it all.

Here's a recap of our 6 day road trip around Utah and bordering states!
Our itinerary from Las Vegas:
Day 1: Zion National Park - we hiked through the narrows and did the drive from the west side entrance to the east side entrance. We spent the night 'glamping' (glamorous camping) in Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort.
Day 2: A hike through Kanarraville Falls in the morning followed by a scenic drive to the Northern Rim of the Grand Canyon. We watched the sunset along the Northern Rim at the Lodge where we ate on the outside viewing deck overlooking the canyon. We then drove through the evening to Lone Rock Beach Primitive Campground just outside of Page, Arizona.
Day 3: An early morning excursion through Antelope Canyon followed by an afternoon trip to Horseshoe Bend. We left with enough daylight so that we could see Monument Valley on the way to Cortez, Colorado for the night. We also drove through the 4 Corners Monument.
Day 4: Another scenic drive to Arches National Park. We spent the day at Arches and then drove to Salina, Utah for the night. There are so many scenic views on this drive so we are glad we still had some daylight to check them out.
Day 5: A hike through Capitol Reef National Park as well as a scenic drive through the park in the morning followed by a beautiful Bryce Canyon sunset. We wanted to see the sunset at Bryce and this was our only day to do so since we had to be back to Vegas by the end of the next day. We stayed the night in Panguitch, Utah.
Day 6: A hike through Bryce Canyon in the morning and then we stopped by Mossy Cave (which is really a waterfall) before our drive back to Vegas for our flight home.

Virginia City, Nevada

Virginia City is one of the oldest established cities in Nevada. Like many cities and towns in the state, Virginia City was a mining boomtown; in fact it is one of the most famous boomtowns in the Old West as it virtually appeared overnight as a result of the Comstock Lode silver strike of 1859. During its peak, Virginia City had a population of nearly 30,000 residents. When the Comstock Lode ended in 1898, the city's population declined sharply.
The population of Virginia City is 1,000 people in the town. Virginia City was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961. This in effect created a Virginia City Historic District. Today, Virginia City is but a shadow of its former glory, however, it still draws over 2 million visitors per year. It is one of the nation's larger National Historic Landmarks and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Keeping with tradition, Virginia City does not have any chain stores or fast food restaurants.

The Ponderosa Ranch was a theme park based on the popular 1960s television western Bonanza. The amusement park operated in Incline Village, near Lake Tahoe, Nevada, from 1967 until 2004. Portions of the last five seasons of the TV series and three TV movies were also filmed at that location. The main attraction was the ranch's version of Virginia City, which was miles from the real Virginia City but immediately adjacent to the rear of the house set.
This video is mostly of the performances on the street in Virginia City. There is also a segment from the ranch house used in the TV series Bonanza.

We got to camp at 8,000 feet and have this incredible view of 16,000 foot mountains where almost no foreigner has been. We also had cows surround our tent and smear poop all over it. They may have even tried on my green Crocs :)
