날씨가 좋아 경비행기 투어를 이용해 매킨리산을 둘러보기로 했다. 탈키트나 근처에서 빙하수로 만들어진 세 개의 강이 한 줄기로 합쳐지는데 강물의 색이 다른 이유는 빙하가 깎은 돌의 종류와 성분이 다르기 때문이라고 한다. 10여 분이 지나자 믿을 수 없을 정도로 장대한 빙하가 눈앞에 펼쳐진다. 매킨리산에서 내려 온 이 빙하의 폭은 8km, 길이는 40km. 얼음의 두께는 무려 1.2km다. 빙하 곳곳에서 크레바스가 보이는데 깊이가 800m나 되는 곳도 있다고 한다. 빙하의 표면에 갈색부터 검은색까지 다양한 줄이 생기는 이유는 빙하가 깎아내린 산에 있던 바위와 돌의 종류가 다르기 때문이다. 매킨리산을 정점으로 한 알래스카 산맥의 계곡마다 어김없이 빙하들이 내려온다. 크고 작은 빙하의 숫자는 수백 개에 달한다. 40km에 달하는 루쓰빙하를 통과해 방향을 살짝 돌리자 바로 옆에 토코시트나 빙하가 보인다. 그 옆으로 멀리 북미 최고봉 매킨리산 정상이 보인다. 비행기는 매킨리 산 남쪽 기슭으로 향했다. 날씨가 좋을 때만 빙하 위에 착륙할 수 있는데 오늘 나는 운이 좋았다. “우리는 매킨리 산 남쪽 기슭에 있는 웨스트 포크라고 불리는 토코시트나 빙하 꼭대기에 올라와 있습니다. 매킨리 산은 저 산등성이 너머에 있는데, 해발 6,1974미터로 북미에서 가장 높은 빙산입니다.” 매킨리산은 한국인 최초로 에베레스트 등반에 성공한 산악인 고상돈씨가 1979년 매킨리산 정상 등정 후 하산하다 동료와 함께 생명을 잃은 곳이기도 하다. 그런데 갑자기 우리가 타고 온 비행기가 이륙하더니 주변을 한 바퀴 돌고 다시 착륙하기를 서너 번 반복한다. 나를 비롯해 다들 걱정스런 모습이다. “끈적끈적한 눈 위에 착륙해서 다시 이륙하기 위해 활주로를 다졌습니다. 마치 스키를 탈 때 눈이 다져질수록 더 빨라지는 것과 같은 원리입니다.“ 다행히 비행기가 떠서 크레바스가 가득한 루쓰빙하를 걸어 내려오는 불상사는 피했다.
