It was a particularly nice day and I felt like going for a ride on my motorcycle and doing some exploring. There's a place called Wisemans Ferry here in Sydney, which has some nice twisty roads and beautiful scenery. A popular place for motorcycles, so I decided to head out that way.
I had been looking up the area on Google Maps the night before and found that there is a very old cemetery nearby, with graves of people from the first fleet of English settlers that arrived in Australia in 1788 and - more interestingly - one person who was (allegedly) on Captain Cook's ship when he first landed in Australia in 1770.
Anyway, that's where I was heading. Here's a photo from the Wisemans Ferry look-out and in this one there's a little road you can see on this side of the river that leads to the cemetery.
Riding down that little road towards the cemetery, I stopped and got out my camera and started to record while I rode. The road itself wasn't particularly smooth and not really wide enough for two cars, but on the bike is was fine. I arrived at the cemetery, stopped recording, and went to have a look around.
It was a beautiful little area - the river on one side, big cliff faces and hills all around, sun shining down, birds singing. I took about 20 photos and found the grave of this first settler. It was pretty warm by then, so I decided to head back home. Left the cemetery and a short way down the road, I filmed a cut-away shot. I was planning on editing the videos in to a bit of a film if they looked okay.
Stopped, put the camera on a post, went back to the bike and rode past the camera. And this is when the trouble started. I got off the bike and went to grab the camera. I pressed the button to stop recording and the camera just froze. I waited a few seconds before pressing other buttons to see if it would come back to life. No luck. After a while, I had to just take the battery out to get it to reset. I switched over the playback to see if the video had actually been saved but it just said unidentified image. I flicked through the other photos I had taken but they all said unidentified image.
I was kind of annoyed, but figured there would be a program somewhere that could fix them or recover the photos. Turns out there are quite a few programs that do just that, but none worked. The only thing I was able to recover is the first video I was recording while riding alone the little road towards the cemetery. At the end of this video, the screen flashes red and freezes as soon as I arrive at the cemetery. I've used Deshaker in VirtualDub to try and smooth it out, but it's still very shaky.
So now I'm confused. Would the problems have been caused by a bad sector on the SD card which happened to coincide with me arriving at the cemetery and meant that none of the photos were properly recorded or would my removable of the battery out after the camera had frozen somehow wiped out a whole section of the SD card?
And here's one of the corrupted JPG files in case anyone wants to see if they can do anything. From memory, it should be a nice over-all photo of the cemetery with the little wooden fence and river and hills in the background:

Wollongong is a city south of Sydney the video starts in the old centre and ends at the beach where all the new towers are. The beach area has gone through a big transformation and has a new stadium and lots of glass towers but it has kept two light houses and all its cannons.
