Byron Shire is a local government area located in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia. The shire is located adjacent to the Tasman Sea about 50 kilometres south of the Queensland border. The shire, administered from the town of Mullumbimby, covers an area of 566.7 square kilometres , and has existed as a local government entity since 1906. The shire was named for Cape Byron, itself named by Captain Cook in May 1770 in honour of Vice-Admiral John Byron. The Mayor of Byron Shire Council is Simon Richardson, a member of the Greens.

  • 3. The Wreck Byron Bay
    The Wreck is a surf spot located at Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia. It is approximately 30 metres off the shore of Belongil Beach , and approximately 60 metres from the Main Beach Car Park. The Wreck is named for the remains of the ship Wollongbar lodged just offshore. The ship lost its tie to the old Byron Bay Pier during a cyclone in 1922 and sank. It is approximately 30 metres long running parallel to the beach. On the eastern end of the Wreck one can see the rudder tiller and at low tide one can see the boilers. The Wreck is best surfed on mid-high tide with a W - SE wind, on a N/NE swell of 3 to 6 feet. When working well, a fast, hollow and powerful right-hander breaks on the sand bank about 10 metres in front of the shipwreck.

    Byron Bay is a beachside town located in the far-northeastern corner of the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located 772 kilometres north of Sydney and 165 kilometres south of Brisbane. Cape Byron, a headland adjacent to the town, is the easternmost point of mainland Australia. At the 2016 census, the town had a permanent population of 9,246. The town is in turn the nucleus of Byron Shire, which had 31,556 residents.The local Arakwal Aboriginal people's name for the area is Cavvanbah, meaning meeting place. Lieutenant James Cook named Cape Byron after Naval officer John Byron, circumnavigator of the world and grandfather of the poet Lord Byron.

Established in 1969, Ocean Shores was originally a land holding owned by Wendell West of Washington with backing from American singer Pat Boone, and was named after Boone's residence in Ocean Shores, Washington. It is located in the Brunswick Valley – a valley including the towns of Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads. The town has a local shopping complex and a large golf course. At the 2016 census, Ocean Shores had a population of 5,137 people.
