Constructed in 1939 to provide protection for Port Kembla from enemy shipping and submarines. The battery and observation post were key structures of the command centre for Fortress Kembla during World War II.

During World War II it was Royal Australian Air Force Station Evans Head supporting RAAF No 1 Bombing and Gunnery School and subsequently the RAAF No 1 Air Observers School. At the height of operations there were three asphalt runways and one grass strip. Only a single asphalt strip is still in use by private aviation.
